Dr. Jean-Pierre Després, scientific director of the International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk at Laval University, believes that schools are to blame for the obesity epidemic among children. Deprés points his finger at schools because he says children spend the bulk of their waking lives in school, where physical activity is minimal, nutritional education is almost non-existent, and food choices are often poor. Numerous studies show that learning is maximized when two-thirds of the school day is spent in the classroom, one-third is spent doing physical education, and children are given no homework.
