Green Municipal Fund Supports Kamloops' Integrated Community Sustainability Plan
KAMLOOPS – Chair Robert Hobson, representing FCM’s Green Municipal Fund and the Honourable Cathy McLeod, on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources, announced today a Green Municipal Fund (GMF) grant for the City of Kamloops. The $327,750 grant will be used to develop an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) in order to tie together various City plans and strategies and provide a comprehensive evaluation framework to guide future growth and development.
“FCM’s Green Municipal Fund offers a range of resources and services that specifically address the sustainable community development needs of municipal governments,” said Robert Hobson, representing FCM’s Green Municipal Fund. “The financing and knowledge provided by the Fund supports the development of communities that are more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable.”
“Our government is assisting municipalities across the country in achieving their goal of a cleaner and healthier environment for Canadians through the Green Municipal Fund,” said the Honourable Cathy McLeod. ”Today’s announcement is another example of how the Government of Canada – in partnership with the FCM – is helping Kamloops build a greener future for its citizens.”
The ICSP is intended to provide direction for all subsequent planning and infrastructure development exercises. It will allow the City to set direction for land use and therefore inform the Official Community Plan and upcoming neighbourhood plans.
The plan will also build on the City’s EcoSmart strategy, Integrated Land Use and Transportation Plan, Stormwater Management Strategy and will be a catalyst for developing airshed management and energy policies that can provide guidance for future development.
“The City of Kamloops appreciates the financial support received from the Green Municipal Fund for our Integrated Community Sustainability Plan,” said Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar.
“Sustainability has been identified as a top priority for City Council and the Sustainability Plan in particular, has been included in the Council Strategic Plan,” added Mayor Milobar.
The Green Municipal Fund is an endowment financed by the Government of Canada and managed by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. The Fund supports partnerships and leveraging of both public and private sector funding to reach higher standards of air, water and soil quality, and climate protection.
FCM has been the national voice of municipal governments since 1901. It fosters sustainable communities enjoying a high quality of life by promoting strong, effective, and accountable municipal government.
