Climate protection still a priority for British Columbians, poll finds
October 20, 2009
VANCOUVER – A majority of British Columbians want strong action on global warming, even if it means paying higher taxes, says a recent poll conducted by the Columbia Institute.
“For the third year in row, more than half of the people we polled were willing to pay higher taxes for strong action on climate change,” “said Charley Beresford, Executive Director of the Columbia Institute. “I think the message is clear: even in tough economic times, climate protection is a key priority for people in BC.”
According to the poll, 52.6 percent of decided British Columbians either somewhat or strongly agreed that local governments should take strong action on global warming even if it means paying higher taxes. This is down only slightly from last year’s total of 57.5 percent, despite the economic downturn.
The poll of 1000 adult British Columbians was conducted for the Columbia Institute by Stratcom from June 22nd to 28th, 2009 and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1%, 19-times-in-20.
