U.N. says emissions vows not enough to avoid rise of 2 degrees C

Filed in: | March 1, 2010
New U.N. modelling finds that emissions commitments made by 60 countries might not be enough to halt global temperature rise at 2 degrees Celsius. Keeping within this temperature range would require greenhouse gas emssions of no more than 48.3 gigatonnes, but studies show these emissions targets are unlikely to be met. New strategies to mitigate carbon emissions, such as "reduced emissions from deforestation and degradation" (REDD) are being proposed as part of a climate pact.
