Gibsons Named World's Most Liveable Community

The Sunshine Coast town of Gibsons has earned a Gold Award for liveability from the United Nations-backed International Awards for Liveable Communities.
Gibsons - pop. 4,200 - won in the Whole City category for towns with a population under 20,000 for best practice and leadership in creating a socially and environmentally sound community.
A 40-minute ferry ride from West Vancouver, Gibsons consists of the quaint fishing village of Gibsons Landing and the commercial-industrial hub of Upper Gibsons on Highway 101.

"Buy American" bogeyman: Instead of fretting about US purchasing policies, we should focus on stimulating Canada's economy

Who knew? It turns out the biggest threat to the Canadian economy and jobs is not collapsed global financial institutions, weak markets, lack of innovation or declining infrastructure. No - apparently the clear and present danger Canada suddenly faces is "Buy American."

2007 Energy Aware Award Winners

The District of Ucluelet and the District of Houston were the top winners at the 2007 Energy Aware Awards presented at the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Convention on Sept. 27.

SmartGrowth BC Smarty Awards

At its June 2007 conference, SmartGrowth BC announced the winners of its second annual Smarty Awards. Smarty Awards are given to municipalities, people and organizations that demonstrate the principales of SmartGrowth. Winners included the Town of Gibsons for its Official Community Plan Review Process and the District of Maple Ridge’s Smart Growth on the Ground Project.

Fraser Basin Council Sustainability Awards

The Fraser Basin Council gives out these awards in five categories to organizations and/or governments of the Fraser Basin. Last years recipients included the City of Williams Lake for ‘Improved Decision-making’ and the Greater Vancouver Regional District for ‘Understanding Sustainability’.

Dawson Creek Wins Energy Aware Award

Dawson Creek won the 2006 Energy Aware Award for its community planning and implementation work.
